What is Call Break?

Call Break is the trick-taking favourite of Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka — and unlike its cousins, there are no teams and no one to blame. Each player calls the tricks they'll win, then fights for exactly that: spades are always trump, and the rule that makes the game is that you must try to beat the winning card whenever you can. Five rounds, one score sheet, no mercy. Play free against bots or with friends in a private room.

How a round works

  1. All 52 cards are dealt — 13 each, every player for themselves.
  2. Starting left of the dealer, each player calls the number of tricks they'll win. The dealer calls last.
  3. Follow the led suit — and if you can beat the current best card, you must. Out of the led suit? Trump if you can.
  4. Every spade beats every heart, diamond and club, every hand. No exceptions, no auction.
  5. A match is 5 rounds with the deal rotating; the highest total after round five wins.

Questions people ask

Are there teams?
No — that's the point. Four players, four scores, and every call is a personal promise.
Are extra tricks good?
Barely — they're worth 0.1 each. Eight tricks on a call of 8 scores 8.0; the same eight tricks on a call of 2 scores just 2.6. Call what your hand is worth.
What if the match ends in a tie?
The leaders play sudden-death rounds until it breaks.
